China leads the world in new-type energy storage capacity
According to China''s National Energy Administration (NEA), by the end of 2024, the total installed capacity of new energy storage projects in China reached 73.76 million
View DetailsThis figure exceeds twice the amount added in 2023. Notably, 74% of this new capacity stemmed from utility-scale projects exceeding 100 MW, reflecting a trend toward bigger, centralized energy storage systems. By December 31, 2024, China's total installed capacity stood at 62 GW and 141 GWh.
A report from the China Electricity Council (CEC), released on March 29, titled “2024 Statistical Report on Electrochemical Energy Storage Power Stations,” details this expansion. It notes that the total capacity more than doubled compared to the previous year, driven by larger projects, enhanced efficiency, and improved safety measures.
China's electrochemical energy storage industry experienced significant growth in 2024, with installed capacity surging past previous records. A report from the China Electricity Council (CEC), released on March 29, titled “2024 Statistical Report on Electrochemical Energy Storage Power Stations,” details this expansion.
Against the backdrop of the “dual-carbon” goals and the accelerated construction of a new energy system, pumped storage energy, accompanied by the demand for a large amount of new energy, has experienced vigorous development in China. Currently, China has built pumped storage installed capacity of 50 million kilowatts, ranking first in the world.
Due to the demand for new energy installations, pumped-storage power stations have become a new investment hotspot in China's power industry. According to official data, by the end of 2024, China's installed pumped-storage capacity had exceeded 58 million kilowatts, with the industry showing an overall positive development trend.
