Energy storage: systems and how to store it
Learn the secrets of storing energy efficiently. Discover the best technologies and tips to achieve this in our article.
View DetailsElectrical Energy Storage is a process of converting electrical energy into a form that can be stored for converting back to electrical energy when needed (McLarnon and Cairns, 1989; Ibrahim et al., 2008). In this section, a technical comparison between the different types of energy storage systems is carried out.
Electrical energy storage systems (EESS) for electrical installations are becoming more prevalent. EESS provide storage of electrical energy so that it can be used later. The approach is not new: EESS in the form of battery-backed uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) have been used for many years. EESS are starting to be used for other purposes.
Reducing end-user demand and demand charges —Commercial and industrial electricity consumers can deploy on-site energy storage to reduce their electricity demand and associated demand charges, which are generally based on their highest observed levels of electricity consumption during peak demand periods.
However, the blended electrodes often suffer from phase-separation and the use of many non-active materials. The design of electrode construction forms is another method to improve the electrochemical performance of these electrochemical energy storage devices.
Also, on the basis of energy storage time, commercially viable energy storage devices are categorized as short-duration and long-duration energy storers. A battery represents a long-term storage unit and capacitors as short-term ones. Batteries are known to possess high energy density (10,300 W/kg) with relatively lesser power density (< 500 W/kg).
Electrical energy storage technologies for stationary applications are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to pumped hydroelectric storage, compressed air energy storage, battery, flow battery, fuel cell, solar fuel, superconducting magnetic energy storage, flywheel, capacitor/supercapacitor, and thermal energy storage.
