View DetailsAdditionally, installing the pumping station and associated infrastructure, such as pipelines, raises environmental concerns, including the construction of tunnels and access roads. Conversely, energy storage batteries offer the advantage of decentralization, eliminating the need for large-scale centralized installations.
The environmental effects of energy storage batteries primarily involve the materials used in manufacturing, decommissioning, and recycling processes. For example, lithium batteries consume substantial electricity during manufacturing, leading to significant carbon emissions, and the production of harmful wastewater and sludge.
Currently, common energy storage methods include pumped storage, mechanical storage, electrochemical storage, power-to-gas, and others. Fig. 1 (b) shows the distribution of these methods. Pumped storage remains the dominant global technology, accounting for 94 % of total energy storage.
Numerous studies advocate for the cost-effectiveness of hybrid energy storage modes . Thus, if the pumping station development mode encounters limitations, such as in smaller power stations or ecological concerns with LCHES, the hybrid development model with HWPBS remains competitive.
Two hydropower storage retrofit modes are assessed technically and economically. The optimal energy storage enhancement in Chinese hydropower is identified. Pumping station retrofit is superior in storage duration and power absorption. Initial cost and channel capacity are critical for battery retrofit.
As the power market mechanisms are refined and energy storage systems gain more opportunities for market transactions, further revenue growth is anticipated alongside ongoing cost reductions. In reality, energy storage development is not a dichotomy and multiple energy storage technologies can coexist.
