This initiative is supported by Apime, the intersectoral professional association for electric mobility. The charging stations will be installed in major Moroccan cities, including Tanger, Rabat, and Casablanca. They will be distributed in such a way as to cover the needs of electric vehicle drivers, both in terms of number and location.
By vehicle type, there are 160 electric cars, 50 utility EVs, 130 two- and three-wheelers, and 10 e-buses. Nevertheless, electric and hybrid vehicles account for less than 1% of the total number of registered vehicles . In 2022, more than 500 EV, 1200 PHEV and 14000 hydrid non-rechargeable vehicles were registred in Morocco . 4.1.2.
To go even further in its strategy, Morocco is making investments in its existing factories but also in new industrial zones specializing in the production of electric batteries. Morocco has already signed agreements with foreign companies for the construction of electric battery gigafactories on its soil.
It has also put in place attractive tax incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles. Another major challenge that Morocco must overcome to succeed in the electric car sector is the development of its charging infrastructure. The country currently has around 1,000 charging stations, most of which are located in major cities.
AFRIMOBILITY, a new CPO and player in the e-mobility sector in Morocco, has deployed on Moroccan highways and cities a charging network branded as FASTVOLT, composed of 22 fast chargers with a rated power of 50 kW for each, as well as 28 AC chargers. By the end of 2024, this CPO is planning to deploy about 220 chargers (80 DC, 140 AC).
It should be mentioned that, in Morocco, public EV charging is still free up to date. Consequently, all charging sessions performed in the studied period were free. Additionally, there were generally no constraints applicable on the charging duration, nor on the plug-in time (the charging station is available 24/24 all week and weekend days).
