Underground Storage: The lack of further economical dam-sites in Botswana represents a cap in water storage capacity. This can be overcome by underground storage of surface run-off water. This technology will allow Botswana to harvest additional water thus improving water security.
Over the years, there have been several water suppliers in Botswana. The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has been supplying towns and cities. In addition, it has been supplying the Department of Water Affairs and District Councils with bulk water for further distribution to the remaining areas in the country.
This reliance is particularly intense in rural areas, where most villages and the mining industry are entirely dependent on groundwater. Despite these challenges, Botswana is taking steps to safeguard its water resources.
Water Rates remain very affordable in Botswana. The Water Utilities Corporation – WUC recently hiked prices, but I still only pay about P85 (approximately $8) per month. I think based on two adults it's very reasonable. I must stress however, that the further out you live from the centre, the cheaper the water is.
